This School is a Language Centre, that is, we only teach languages. It is part of a quite large net of Language Schools distributed all round Spain. In the bigger ones- for instance, Madrid or Barcelona- you have an offer of more than 20 languages. Ours is more modest and it only offers two languages- English and French-.There are four teachers in the English Department and three in the French Department.
There are five levels, divided into two cycles. The first cycle - three years -, leads to the "Certificado de Ciclo Elemental"; the second cycle - two years – leads to the "Certificado de Aptitud", which is the most prestigious language degree given in Spain – apart from university education.
The Certificates awarded by Language Schools are officially recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Education. It enables teachers of Primary Education, who already hold a university degree, to teach a foreign language at the second cycle in Secondary Education (without which they would only be able to teach Primary levels). The education authorities also recognise the Certificate as a merit to take part in competitive exams and transfers. It is likewise worthy for the acquisition of training and competitiveness in order to get a job in private companies. However, it does not guarantee a job straight away.
Our students are a mixture of adults and teenagers; the minimum age to register is 14 and, at least theoretically, there is no age limit. As this is not compulsory education and we have a large number of adult students, motivation tends to be higher than in High Schools. Another advantage is that we don’t have to face any serious discipline problems or disruptive behaviour among our younger students.
We share the building with a High School. They work in the morning and we work in the afternoon/evening (lessons start at 4 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.).
Unfortunately, our premises are not in a very good condition for the purpose of teaching and learning modern foreign languages, however we have plenty of modern equipment and resources, such as, a language lab, five TV sets, one of them with the SECAM system, five videos, a camcorder, a satellite dish, three overhead projectors, four computers in the departments and one in the language laboratory (all of them connected to the Internet;and two of them have Video-conference equipment available). There is also a computer at the library with Video - conference equipment, too. There are also four printers, several radiocassettes, one in every classroom, and a more or less decent collection of material and books which makes it possible to provide the students with high teaching standards.
We also keep a subscription to two French magazines and an English one - Newsweek- and to "Speak Up".
Our students have the possibility of borrowing books and video tapes from both Departments as well as free access to Internet.
